Europe on Tuesday: Review and outlook on EU enlargement
At the current "Europe on Tuesday" event on January 21 at 7 p.m., political scientist and historian Siebo Janssen will shed light on the successes and challenges of past enlargements and the prospects for the coming years. He will also consider Russia's perspective and the effects of EU enlargement on the global power structure. The discussion, moderated by Jochen Leyhe, will take place in the Grashaus at Fischmarkt 3 and will also be broadcast online.
A good 20 years ago, the European Union underwent its biggest enlargement to date. Ten new member states joined the EU, followed by Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia. This historic eastward enlargement marked a turning point for Europe, overcoming the decades-long division of the continent. What have we learned from this process? Which aspects have proved successful and where do we need to be more cautious in future enlargements? The developments in Poland and Hungary raise questions about how we can better protect democratic values and the rule of law in the enlarged Union.
In addition, EU accession negotiations have begun with Ukraine and Moldova. What are the reasons for further enlargement? How can we shape a fair accession process for Ukraine that takes into account both the country's needs and the concerns of existing EU members?
