Vennbahnweg: tree maintenance work continues
On the Vennbahnweg, the tree maintenance staff of Aachener Stadtbetrieb are currently busy with tree care measures. Among other things, they are ensuring that the trees are kept safe for traffic. From February 10 to 14, the tree work will continue on the Vennbahnweg in the section between the Brand business park and Eckener Straße.
The heavy equipment and the work and road safety regulations are the reason why the Vennbahnweg is completely closed to pedestrian and cycle traffic on this section from 7.30 am to 4 pm. A detour is in place in both directions through the Brand business park and is signposted: Gewerbepark Brand (house numbers 10-32), An der alten Waggonfabrik (footpath and cycle path), Eckener Straße.
In addition to tree maintenance work to ensure traffic safety, dead trees and so-called seedlings (trees with a circumference of less than 30 centimetres) that are at risk of developing into traffic hazards are also removed. "Natural rejuvenation in the sometimes very dense tree population is urgently needed," says Nino Polazcek-Keilhauer, team leader for tree care at Aachen's municipal services. "These measures give the other healthy young trees a good opportunity to develop." With sufficient space, these trees can then perform their intended function and contribute to a good urban climate.
In order to also preserve and create new habitats for birds and insects, any cuttings are chopped up and distributed in the stand on site. "Where the space is right, we will also leave whole pieces of trunk in the stand, which can contribute to species conservation for years to come," says Polazcek-Keilhauer. The work will of course be carried out with breeding and nesting protection in mind.
From February 3 to 7, the city's tree maintenance staff were working on the Vennbahnweg in the Debyestraße/Gewerbepark Brand section.
