Bridge for pedestrians in Walheim will be closed
The pedestrian bridge in Eisenhütte on hiking trail number five along the Iter, on the section between Eisenhütte and Messweg, is no longer stable. Damage has occurred to the abutment of the masonry vaulted bridge made of natural stone, among other things. The Aachen city authorities have therefore closed the bridge this week.
The bridge over the Iterbach was damaged during the 2021 floods. The experts suspect that the abutment corner, which is made of quarry stone, was swept away due to the impact of floating debris on the eastern bank.
This also caused the southern arch to sag. In addition, erosion in the stream bed has created large water depths below the bridge in places.
