Between pallet trucks, lawn mowers and excavators:
Girls' Day at the Aachen municipal company
- 20 girls explore many different areas of training on Girls' Day.
- Alderman Heiko Thomas encourages the participants to take the opportunity to try it out.
- The wide range of career opportunities in municipal operations inspired the students.
Girls' Day at Aachener Stadtbetrieb is a popular event. 20 girls between the ages of 11 and 16 signed up to get to know the wide range of job profiles: They decided in advance which of the exciting training professions they would like to get to know better: If you love plants, are skilled with your hands and want to help shape the city of Aachen creatively, then gardening is the right place for you. The professions can be tried out in the fields of horticulture and landscaping, ornamental plant cultivation and cemetery gardening. And how do automotive mechatronics technicians work? What are the tasks of a digitalization manager? "We're opening our doors and showing you what we have to offer," said Indra Balsam, Operations Manager of the Aachen municipal company. "Be curious, try things out and find out what you enjoy."
"It's a really great opportunity to see what our municipal company does," said Heiko Thomas, Aachen's Councillor for Climate and Environment, Municipal Operations and Buildings. And he emphasized: "I'm a total fan of Stadtbetrieb. There's a lot to experience here, this is the part that really keeps our city running."
Varied and diverse
During the lunch break, Mayor Sibylle Keupen also visited the Girls' Day at the municipal company. The girls reported on their impressions: from the municipal nursery, the workshop, tree maintenance, IT and also from the morning with the operations manager. During the subsequent tour of the company premises, the participants had the opportunity to drive a pallet truck, take a look at a sweeper and a waste collection vehicle and were given an insight into the salt hall.
Many of the participants had specifically chosen to visit the municipal company on Girls' Day. The wide range of opportunities was clearly emphasized by the schoolgirls during the feedback round: they talked enthusiastically about driving pallet trucks, visiting the crematorium, driving sweepers, potting plants and, above all, the diversity of the city and the many friendly employees on site.
