New Year's Eve: fireworks ban to protect the historic old town
The city of Aachen has once again issued a general decree banning fireworks for New Year's Eve.
The ban is limited to the carrying and setting off of fireworks that can reach a height of more than one meter on and within the Grabenring and Theaterplatz. The historical, religious and cultural buildings worthy of protection in Aachen's city center are concentrated in this area, which are exposed to a particular and significantly increased risk of fire from New Year's Eve fireworks.
Back in 2010, there was a fire in St. Nicholas Church on New Year's Eve. Caused by a New Year's Eve rocket, the fire damaged the building and the historic high altar.
The ban on setting off fireworks applies for the period from midnight on December 31, 2024 to midnight on January 1, 2025. Fireworks may not be carried in the aforementioned area from December 31, 2024 6 p.m. until January 1, 2025 midnight. The general decree can be read at aachen.de/ohnefeuerwerk.
In addition, the City of Aachen would like to point out that in accordance with Section 23 Paragraph 1 of the First Ordinance to the Explosives Act, the burning of pyrotechnic objects in the immediate vicinity of churches, hospitals, children's and old people's homes and particularly fire-sensitive buildings or facilities is generally prohibited. This also applies to all areas outside the trench ring. This means that fireworks may only be set off to a limited extent in Kornelimünster or Burtscheid, for example.
