Bilal Mosque
60 Years of Postwar Modernism
The Bilal Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Germany. It is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Because of its architectural history and its central location in Aachen’s student district, it is known as the “campus mosque.” Since its construction in the 1960s, the mosque has provided a space for spiritual, social, and cultural exchange. In addition to its architectural and historical significance for postwar modernist religious architecture, the prayer and community center serves as an important historical testament to Muslim religious life in Germany. The Bilal Mosque was added to the City of Aachen’s list of historic landmarks in 2012.
