Top right. Right-wing populism as a class project—reading and discussion with Heinrich Geiselberger
After Donald Trump’s first election victory in 2016, the political left was accused of ignoring economic issues. “Poorer voters” were said to have voted for a strong leader partly for this reason. However, the focus on “woke” leftists and social “losers” is too narrow. At least since Trump’s second term, it has become clear that, for example, tech capitalists like Elon Musk or Peter Thiel have an interest in illiberal politics. The lecture examines the influence of key political entrepreneurs and puts forward the thesis—for discussion—that right-wing populism is not a spontaneous revolt “from below,” but rather a deliberately driven project “from above.”
Heinrich Geiselberger is an editor at Suhrkamp Verlag and the editor of the anthology “Top Right: Right-Wing Populism as a Class Project.”
The event is free of charge.
