The Long Bike Ride - Reading and Discussion

In 2023–24, Christian Y. Schmidt—a shrewd expert on China (and former editor at *Titanic*)—cycled nearly 7,000 kilometers through China: following in the footsteps of the Chinese Communist Party’s legendary “Long March” and always accompanied by his partner Volker Häring, an experienced cycling tour operator. Drawing on their wealth of impressions and experiences, the two have created a highly entertaining book that reads primarily like a road movie, but also explores the culture of remembrance surrounding the Long March of the 1930s as well as the profound transformation China has undergone in recent decades. What would Otto Braun, the actual “inventor” of the Long March, have thought of this feat?
