Climate Migration as a Challenge for the EU
The effects of climate change are increasingly becoming a driver of profound social, economic, and political changes worldwide.Water plays a
particularly important role in this context: too little of it (water scarcity, droughts) or “too much” (floods, rising sea levels) threaten the livelihoods of millions of people. Many are forced to leave their homes. Many people are wondering what this “climate migration” actually means for the European Union.
At “Europe on Tuesday,” we will discuss with expert Dr. Benjamin Schraven the developments Europe must prepare for.
What political responses to “climate migration” are appropriate and necessary? What potential does the EU Water Resilience Strategy, for example, have to mitigate future crises?
Dr. Benjamin Schraven is an Associate Senior Research Fellow at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). He earned his Ph.D. in development studies from the University of Bonn and advises on various migration issues, including the EU, the World Bank, UN organizations, and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
Questions from the audience are welcome. Niklas Iwannek will moderate the discussion. He is a moderator specializing in political and social issues. He works in editorial roles and is also active as an actor.
