Insights into the History of Theaterplatz – From the Construction Site to the Planning
OfficeThere was great interest among Aachen residents when the first skeletal remains from a historic cemetery were unearthed at the Theaterplatz construction site in February 2025. Archaeologists saw many visitors peering curiously over the construction fence, wondering what exactly was being discovered there.
Anyone who wants to learn more about what we can learn from the finds at the Capuchin monastery and cemetery grounds—which were located where Theaterplatz stands today—will now find what they’re looking for: The exhibition “Traces of History: Archaeological Finds at Theaterplatz” makes these discoveries accessible to everyone for the first time. While the numerous
recovered skeletal remains are not on display, many other fascinating objects are: from a cannonball and a funeral wreath to a pitchfork and plaster fragments. They tell the story of the monastery’s architecture as well as the lives of the monks and the citizens of Aachen. And they provide answers to the question of what new insights the finds offer into Aachen’s city history.
Come by and take a journey through Aachen’s history with these finds.
