Charlemagne Prize winner 2026: Mario Draghi
After graduating from Pius-Gymnasium and studying law in Bonn, Daniel Goffart completed an internship at the Aachener Zeitung and joined the political desk of the Berliner Morgenpost in 1992. In 1996, he moved to the Handelsblatt, where he served as the head of the economics and politics department. From 2012 to 2019, he served as head of the Berlin editorial office at the news magazine FOCUS; he has been with Wirtschaftswoche since 2020 and has served as chief European correspondent based in Brussels
since 2024. Goffart has also been a successful author, writing biographies of figures such as Helmut Kohl, Peer Steinbrück, Ursula von der Leyen, and Friedrich Merz. He was awarded the German Journalism Prize in 2023 and was shortlisted for the 2019 Best Business Book award for his title “The End of the Middle Class.” At Sparkasse Aachen, the economic expert will introduce this year’s Charlemagne Prize winner to the public.
