Putting Europe to the test: competitiveness in a changing world
“The awarding of the 2026 Charlemagne Prize to Mario Draghi,” the Board of Directors stated in its official rationale, “is a deliberate signal regarding the urgently needed shift in priorities: Europe must renew its economic strength in order to shape its future on its own terms.”
How the EU can hold its own as a business location in the competition among nations has been a concern of Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther for many years. Born in Düsseldorf, he is one of Germany’s most renowned and well-known economists. Secretary General of the German Council of Economic Experts in the 1990s, he joined DekaBank as Chief Economist in 1999. Since 2004, he has been Director and a member of the Executive Board of the Cologne Institute for Economic Research. In Aachen, he will speak about one of Europe’s greatest trials.
