Aachen-Mitte district

Aachen-Mitte is the largest district in Aachen, and even in North Rhine-Westphalia. With around 160,000 people, more than half of all Aachen residents live here. The area includes the old city area without the surrounding municipalities that were incorporated in 1971 and now form their own district councils. This is why the district of Aachen-Mitte is characterized by a particularly high level of diversity.

Welcome to Aachen-Mitte

Not only the historic city center around the cathedral and town hall and the university quarter, around the old main building of the RWTH with its streets populated by students, but also the former independent communities of Burtscheid with its spa facilities or Forst have their own individual character together with the other districts. Aachen-Mitte also includes the Ostviertel - characterized by its multicultural diversity - and the Frankenberger Viertel with its well-preserved and in some cases lovingly restored town houses. In the 1970s, new residential areas were created in Forst with the Driescher Hof, the Preuswald estate in the forest on the border with Belgium and Hanbruch on the way to the Netherlands. In their design and character, they all embody the different planning concepts of the time and form their own identities - Aachen Nord and Rothe Erde are characterized by former large-scale industry and the associated workers' housing estates. Today, both districts are being transformed into ultra-modern production sites, such as the construction of electric vehicles.

The district of Aachen-Mitte is a district that preserves and maintains what is tried and tested, but does not close its mind to the necessary change. Over the next few years, a modern university extension will be built on former railroad land. The Campus West will connect the university's old traditional location in the city center with the existing Campus Melaten and the hospital. In the city center, an extensive change in mobility is beginning after the city council passed the bicycle referendum with a large majority.

The district of Aachen-Mitte also has a lot to offer tourists, not only the old town center but also the Aachen Forest, which extends to the Belgian border, offers numerous attractive hiking trails and a climbing forest. The zoo is always a worthwhile destination. The Hangeweiher pond with its outdoor pool or the Diepenbenden reservoir offer attractive leisure activities. And there are many attractive areas in the individual districts that are always worth a visit.

With around 160,000 people, more than half of all Aachen residents live in the Aachen-Mitte district. Nevertheless, the city, with its overlapping Roman and Carolingian urban layouts, which have formed many interesting squares, remains manageable and is easy to experience on foot or by bike.

So don't just visit the city center around the cathedral and town hall. The other districts also have a lot to offer and there are many gems to discover - a particularly large variety in the Aachen-Mitte district.
