Row graves
Rows of graves are basically single-family graves that are occupied in sequence and only allocated in the event of death. They only remain in existence for the duration of the resting period specified at the respective cemetery and cannot be extended under any circumstances.
If a row grave has to be cleared, this will be announced six months before the end of the resting period in the local daily newspapers and by means of a sign on the grave field in question. Within the clearance period, those entitled to dispose of the grave must remove the grave at their own expense. After the deadline has expired, the authorized person can no longer make a claim. The remaining graves will then be removed by Aachener Stadtbetrieb. This applies equally to all types of row graves, regardless of whether they are buried in a coffin or an urn, whether the grave is laid out and maintained or anonymous.
You can find details on the row graves in the cemetery statutes.

Grave decorations of any kind may only be placed in the designated area. The names of the deceased buried here can be marked at a central location as specified by Aachener Stadtbetrieb. Communal grave for urn burial
At various cemeteries, historically valuable or listed large burial grounds are created as communal burial grounds for urn burials.
Aachener Stadtbetrieb selects suitable burial grounds for this purpose. The number of urn burials possible here depends on the size and nature of the grave site. Each communal burial ground is treated as a terraced burial ground. The available grave spaces within the communal area cannot be selected, but are filled in order. However, within the scope of the available burial options, grave spaces can be reserved for a fee.
The creation and maintenance of the facility is allocated proportionately to the grave costs. The name and details of the deceased may be affixed in accordance with the grave-related specifications. Grave decorations may only be placed in the designated area.
Elective graves
Elective burial sites are offered for coffin or urn burial in earth graves, crypts or above-ground chambers. A right of use is granted for a period of up to 40 years. The type of grave and its location will be determined with the purchaser according to the available options. The stipulated resting periods remain unaffected by this. A right of use can also be acquired for historically valuable or listed graves. Rights of use can be acquired both in the event of a burial and during a person's lifetime.
The right of use entails the obligation to care for and maintain the gravesite.
Elective grave for coffin burial
Elective graves are offered for coffin burials in the ground or in crypts for one or more deceased persons. The size of the grave bed is calculated from the number of grave spaces. If the right of use is sufficiently long, one coffin burial plus one urn burial can be made per elective grave site. If an elective burial plot is not used for a coffin burial, two urns can be buried in each elective burial plot. These graves are available in locations with or without special design requirements.
The dignity of the cemetery must be preserved when designing the grave site.
Details on the elective graves can be found in the cemetery statutes, § 16.Urn graves

Specialist companies from the Aachener Friedhofsgärtner e.G. cooperative maintain and care for the "Memoriam Garden". The burials are carried out by the Aachener Stadtbetrieb. A prerequisite for burial in this area is the conclusion of a maintenance contract with the Aachener Friedhofsgärtner e.G. cooperative.
