Rescue service

The medical care of Aachen's citizens is provided by the City of Aachen's rescue service.
In addition to the emergency care received via the emergency number 112, this often involves transportation that requires medical assistance. Our colleagues in Aachen also manage the coordination of all these journeys and the respective qualified specialist personnel.

Who helps when?

Unfortunately, we experience time and again that the term emergency is interpreted differently or sometimes misunderstood. Basically, you can always first consider whether you can help yourself or whether the help of acquaintances, neighbors, colleagues or family members is sufficient. You can also call a cab to get to the doctor or hospital. Otherwise, there are many different ways to get help. We have listed the most important numbers here and found some examples to help you understand who you should call and when.

  • Emergency call 112

Only for emergencies or acutely life-threatening conditions & illnesses such as:

    • Shortness of breath or unconsciousness
    • Severe persistent pain in the chest
    • severe injuries with major blood loss
    • Seizures
Ambulance in front of the town hall
  • Patient transportation 19222

For hospital admissions, necessary trips to doctors' surgeries or trips where specialist medical care is required.

    several ambulances in a row.
  • Medical on-call service 116117

    • Muscle tension
    • Back pain for days

Rescue service school

The Aachen Rescue Service School is a state-recognized emergency paramedic school. In addition to the training of paramedics and the annual further and advanced training of almost 400 employees, training to become an emergency paramedic is one of the core elements of the school. The fact that the paramedic school is part of the Aachen professional fire department results in special training features that are unique and thus represent a unique selling point.

To the rescue service school

  • Telemedicine

Trainees come into contact with telemedicine at an early stage and spend time with emergency doctors.

    Treatment in the ambulance
  • Special rescue

Trainees experience at first hand what it means to apply medical skills in extraordinary situations.

A fire officer candidate is trained in fall protection by a height rescuer on a steel lattice mast structure. The exercise was carried out on the Falkenbach viaduct.
  • Control center

Work shadowing with experienced control center dispatchers is an integral part of the training plan.

In day-to-day operations, several seats are always occupied in the control center and others are always ready for action. Four employees are currently sitting visibly at their desks and taking emergency calls. One employee is sitting with his back to the camera and has various programs on the screens in front of him. These include a detailed map of Aachen.
  • International cooperation

We regularly go on excursions to cross-border control centers and rescue stations to get to know the local rescue service systems at first hand.

We exchange information with neighboring countries at regular intervals and take part in joint training courses on the subject of rescue services. We present to each other how the respective processes are planned.

The training in detail.

  • What tasks do emergency paramedics have

Emergency paramedics have the highest level of non-medical training in emergency medicine in the whole of Germany. They are alerted to unforeseeable emergencies in the urban area and stabilize the health of patients at the scene so that they can be transported safely and reliably to a suitable hospital. In doing so, they have a leadership responsibility in teamwork and specify the measures to be taken.

  • How long does the training last and where does it take place?

The training usually lasts three years and takes place entirely in Aachen.

    • School lessons at the rescue service school
    • Internships at the fire and rescue stations of the professional fire department
    • The clinical internships take place in hospitals in the immediate vicinity.
  • What happens after the apprenticeship?

After successfully completing the training, we offer seamless firefighting training at the Aachen professional fire department.
With a further 18 months of training, you can become a fire chief with civil servant status.

We want to make a lifelong and loyal commitment to you and therefore offer you one of the most versatile and sustainable professions: Fire and rescue service!
