In day-to-day operations, several seats are always occupied in the control center and others are always ready for action. Four employees are currently sitting visibly at their desks and taking emergency calls. One employee is sitting with his back to the camera and has various programs on the screens in front of him. These include a detailed map of Aachen.

Aachen fire department control center

Control center

The Aachen control center is operated by the professional fire department and is responsible for dispatching fire protection, rescue service and disaster control resources for more than 500,000 residents.

The coordination of personnel and vehicles while ensuring general safety is always the focus of the employees. For this purpose, the control center has a modern operations control system, a communication management system and other subsystems.

What happens in the control center?

An employee sits at his desk and immediately takes the next emergency call.

Put simply, every call received in the area to 112 or the ambulance number 19222 is answered by colleagues at the control center. They then decide which ambulance will be sent to the scene. At least eleven employees are available around the clock every day for this purpose, as well as two additional employees during the day. If the number of calls increases, additional colleagues are always ready to take up duty at other workstations.

We receive an average of 1,000 calls within 24 hours. Not all of them are emergencies.

Some calls end up with us even though there are other more suitable ways. This is often not meant maliciously and happens out of panic or ignorance. As in so many cases, it helps to find out in advance under which conditions who is best placed to help.

In addition to dialing 911, there are many other options and offers of help that are available to all citizens. If it is not a matter of life or death, the following measures should be considered before calling 911.

  • A visit to the family doctor
  • Information from the Patient Service
  • A cab or a ride with friends/family to the doctor/hospital

If you are not sure whether it is a life-threatening emergency, dial 112 to be on the safe side.

Who helps when?

Unfortunately, we experience time and again that the term emergency is interpreted differently or sometimes misunderstood. Basically, you can always first consider whether you can help yourself or whether the help of acquaintances, neighbors, colleagues or family members is sufficient. You can also call a cab to get to the doctor or hospital. Otherwise, there are many different ways to get help. We have listed the most important numbers here and found some examples to help you understand who you should call and when.
