Two fire engines are on their way to a scene. The route leads through a small wooded area with many trees to the right and left.

Aachen fire department

We always move out when the people of Aachen need us. This is no longer just when there is a fire. The fundamental task of the fire department is to ensure the safety of citizens and to help in the event of an emergency.

Our tasks

4 building blocks of the fire department: extinguish, protect, save, rescue
  • Delete

If a fire has broken out and the fire department has been notified, it only takes a few minutes for help to arrive on the scene. At the scene, all units get an overview and allocate responsibilities. We stay as long as we are needed!

  • Bergen

Possibly the worst part of our work is when all help comes too late and nothing can be saved.
Unfortunately, people who have not survived their emergency are also part of our everyday life.

  • Protect

The protection of all Aachen residents is always our top priority. From the moment the emergency call is made, you can rest assured that we will do everything in our power to help.

  • Rescue

As long as there is even the slightest chance of saving a life, we will not give up. Keeping a cool head and helping in life-threatening situations. That's what our emergency services are there for.

Special features & specializations

Layout 1

Control center

The control center is manned around the clock by several employees. The individual workstations are technically extensive and take up a lot of space. For noise reasons, the control center is therefore naturally a huge open-plan office.

The Aachen control center is operated by the professional fire department. We are responsible for dispatching emergency resources from the areas of fire protection, rescue services and disaster control. Every single day of the year, we are available around the clock to take emergency calls. The control center receives an average of 1,000 calls a day.

Everyday guard duty

Uniform Command and Control

Everyday life as a firefighter is often romanticized. However, in order to be ready for action at any time in the event of an emergency, there is a lot involved in the background. At least here in Aachen, a normal shift therefore consists of many different activities that fill at least an average working day, regardless of the number of calls.

  • Activities on the watch

    • Continuous training
    • Practical training
    • Joint service sport
    • Vehicle inspection
    • Handover and takeover of the watch from another shift
    • Multiple checks, maintenance and cleaning of all equipment
    • Duty rostering
    • Ensuring the availability of rescue services
    • Emergency call acceptance by the control center
    • Goods receipt
    • Organization, ordering and acceptance of permanent consumables

and various other responsibilities at the station (cleaning uniforms, repairs, cooking, shopping...)

  • What happens when an emergency call is received?

When we are on duty, we are always on standby at the station. When a call comes in to the control center and we receive an assignment, we are informed by announcement which vehicles will be deployed. The emergency decides WHAT, WHERE and HOW MANY.
We immediately drop everything and make our way to the vehicle hall. As soon as the entire crew is sitting in the vehicle in their turnout gear, the doors open and we move out. The command vehicle drives up, then we roll off one after the other and drive to the scene as quickly as possible.
We never know exactly what to expect when the alarm goes off, but we always have suitable vehicles, the right equipment and, above all, the best helpers with us and always keep a cool head!

Jobs at the Aachen Fire Department

We are looking for experienced colleagues, trainees and career changers from manual, technical or scientific backgrounds.
If you are sporty and want to help other people, you already have the most important prerequisites for working in the fire and rescue service. A cool head and empathy help in the field. A willingness to perform, courageous and responsible action, mental resilience, as well as enjoyment of working with modern technical equipment and a willingness to work shifts are further important prerequisites.
A quick grasp of things and enjoyment of working closely in a team round off the profile.
