The gardeners of Aachen's municipal services are out and about in the parks and green spaces every day. They make an important contribution to green diversity in the city. They mow the lawns, maintain the hedges and plant the flower beds, check and maintain the public and municipal sports grounds and playgrounds. Targeted projects promote biodiversity and the variety of species of microorganisms and vegetation.

Many parks, park-like facilities, green and natural areas are located in Aachen's urban area. They are used for local recreation, leisure activities and to improve the urban climate. In the parks, the employees of Aachener Stadtbetrieb maintain the plants, lawns and water areas, trees and infrastructure and ensure that parks and park-like areas are always in a well-maintained condition and can be used by citizens and visitors. When it comes to maintaining natural areas, the municipal company takes care of the paths and squares, vegetation and water areas.
Public playgrounds
There are around 300 public playgrounds, football pitches and skate parks in Aachen. Aachener Stadtbetrieb is responsible for the maintenance and control of these facilities. This includes the green areas, all play equipment, facilities and structures such as walls, bridges, stands, steps and fences.
Playground inspection
Wear and tear, weathering, material fatigue and vandalism leave their mark on playground equipment. Regular checks and maintenance work help to prevent accidents. The safety of the play equipment and the entire playground is the top priority in all work. The people of Aachen and their children should be able to use a playground that is permanently safe, clean and as attractive as possible in order to offer children a wide range of development and development opportunities. Playgrounds are particularly important in densely populated residential areas in urban areas, as there are often no safe places to play next to parents' homes.
This inspection is carried out in several stages: Firstly, playground maintenance includes weekly visual inspections by a playground attendant to identify obvious sources of danger. Then there is a quarterly operational check, in which wearing parts and moving parts in particular are checked. And finally, once a year, the municipal operations staff carry out a main inspection to determine the general operational safety and stability of all play equipment and its foundations.
The annual service includes the replacement of play sand and the repair of play equipment. The playgrounds are cleaned weekly.
Signs have been installed at the playgrounds that not only list the emergency number 112, but also a service telephone number (0241 / 432-18555) and a service e-mail address for the municipal company. Repair tips can be reported there.

Sports field maintenance
Aachener Stadtbetrieb is responsible for the horticultural and technical care and maintenance of sports fields and athletics facilities. Sports turf areas are subject to particularly high levels of stress. Here it is necessary to carry out further maintenance measures in addition to the usual mowing, whereby the heavy strain can be compensated for as far as possible and any damage can be effectively repaired.

Tree and green space sponsorships
There are around 20,000 street trees in Aachen; a further 95,000 trees and countless shrubs grow in the 400 hectares of parks and green spaces. Trees in the city are even more exposed to extreme environmental influences than their "relatives" in the forest. These special living conditions require a great deal of effort to care for trees in the city. Sponsors can support Aachen's municipal services and take intensive care of a piece of nature in the city.
