All eligible voters can also vote for the district representative of the borough in which they are registered.
Participation in the election
You can vote in the local elections in three ways:
If you are entitled to vote and have moved in the weeks before the election, your registration, re-registration or deregistration may affect your eligibility to vote, depending on the time.
If you have moved within your previous constituency and have re-registered after August 4, 2025, you will remain on the electoral roll of your old constituency and remain eligible to vote.
It is not possible to transfer to the new voting district, not even on request. If you are unable to vote in your old constituency on election day, please apply for postal voting documents in good time or use the direct voting system.
If you moved to another electoral district and re-registered between August 4 and 29, 2025, you were automatically entered in the electoral roll of the new electoral district and are entitled to vote there. You should have received a new polling card at your new address. If you have already applied for postal voting documents, these have become invalid and must be reapplied for.
If you moved to Aachen and registered between August 4 and 29, 2025, you were automatically entered in the electoral roll. You are entitled to vote in Aachen and have received a voter's notification by post.
If you registered after August 30, 2025, you are not eligible to vote in the municipal elections in Aachen.
If you have moved away from Aachen and registered in your new municipality or deregistered your residence in Germany between September 4 and 12, 2025, we have deleted you from the Aachen electoral roll. If you have already applied for postal voting documents in Aachen, these are invalid.

Local elections are held for a period of five years:
If no candidate achieves an absolute majority in the election of the city council and/or the election of the Lord Mayor on September 14, 2025, there will be a run-off election on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
In the council election, each person entitled to vote has one vote, with which they simultaneously vote for a constituency candidate and the reserve list of the party or group of voters for which the constituency candidate is nominated.
The election of district representatives is a pure list election in which every voter also has one vote.
The city of Aachen needs a total of around 2,500 electoral assistants to carry out the local elections and integration council elections. You can find out more about this voluntary work here:
