Basic rules for riding e-scooters (No claim to completeness. The rules presented relate to behavior that is particularly frequently recorded by the police)
Traffic areas
E-scooter riders must use cycle traffic facilities. If these are not available, they ride on the roadway.
Alcohol
The same rules apply for e-scooter riders as for car drivers: It is recommended to refrain from consuming alcohol. From a limit of 0.5 per mille, a fine of 500 euros, a one-month driving ban and two points on the driving aptitude register will be imposed.
Areas for pedestrian traffic
Footpaths and pedestrian zones may not be used by e-scooter riders as a matter of principle. Exceptions must be signposted.
Carriage
E-scooters are only permitted for one person.
Parking
Parked e-scooters must not obstruct anyone or block paths. They must be parked at the side of the road or on footpaths in such a way that pedestrians or other road users are not obstructed or endangered
Helmet
There is no obligation to wear a helmet. However, wearing a helmet is recommended for your own protection.
