Where are cycle priority routes planned?

Overall network of priority cycle routes

A priority cycle route is to be established from each of Aachen's outer districts into the city center in line with the main inner-city traffic flows. All priority cycle routes are to be connected with each other. The Grabenring is to take on the function of a "cycle distribution ring". The following network was adopted in 2019: Aachen cycle network (map status: Sept. 2019).

  • The Eilendorf priority cycle route is the first route to be tackled in Aachen from Elisenbrunnen via Lothringerstrasse and Bismarckstrasse to Vennbahnweg. In Eilendorf, the route leads from the train station via the district office and Marien-/Kleebachstraße to the Vennbahn. It is part of the "Aachen 1 priority cycle route" project (funding project in "Climate protection through cycling").
  • The Campus Melaten route is also part of the first funding project and will be completed in 2021. It leads from the main building via Geschwister-Scholl-Straße to Westbahnhof and via Kopernikusstraße and Siemenstraße to Campus Boulevard.
  • The Brand priority cycle route is to be connected via the signposted cycle network parallel to Trierer Straße. It branches off from the RVR Eilendorf, which is currently under construction, at Drimbornstraße. Both routes therefore start at Elisenbrunnen. The cycle route sections will be completed in summer 2021; the sections with structural interventions (including Krautmühlenweg, Lintertstraße and Rombachstraße) are planned for 2022.
  • The cycle highway to Herzogenrath/Kerkrade/Heerlen is planned in the city of Aachen as the "Richterich route" via Rütscherstraße and the old railroad embankment. Extensive bridge construction work is required here.
  • Another important route to the north runs via Soerser Weg to Berensberg (with a continuation to Kohlscheid)
  • Haaren is to be connected via Rehmplatz and the Wurm cycle path; a continuation to Verlautenheide is planned via the Haarener Gracht.
  • Kornelimünster is to be connected via the Kornelimünsterweg, as signposted in the NRW cycle network. The continuation to Walheim via Aachener Straße also connects Oberforstbach and Schleckheim. The routes should be upgraded.
  • Preuswald is to be connected via Lütticher Straße. The route between Waldschenke and Mozartstraße has not yet been determined.
  • The Vaalserquartier and Vaals are to be connected via Vaalser Strasse and Lochnerstrasse.

With a few exceptions, the city of Aachen's cycle network, which was signposted in 1994, is to be used. Different upgrades are required on all routes so that the traffic objectives associated with them can be achieved.

The network of priority cycle routes covers around 60 km.

The Mobility Committee of the City of Aachen unanimously took note of the draft for a priority cycle network on 27.04.2017. The administration's presentation explains the concept. The network and the concept were then discussed with citizens, associations and district councils.

The route of the priority cycle network and the associated objectives were unanimously approved by the City of Aachen's Mobility Committee on 12.09.2019.

With the process launched in fall 2021 with expert support to develop the "Aachen main cycle network", the routes of the priority cycle routes and the scope of the priority network in the overall context of the "Aachen cycle network" will also be discussed with associations and politicians in 2022.
