The upgrading and expansion of Aachen's cycling network is one of six fields of action in the Cycling Strategy 2030, which was adopted by the Mobility Committee in summer 2022. In addition to safeguarding cycling on main roads for motor vehicle traffic in accordance with regulations and guidelines, the expansion of the main cycling network is a major task. The main cycle network, designed in three hierarchical levels, was adopted in summer 2023 and has since formed the basis for the future expansion of cycling infrastructure in Aachen. The cycling strategy stipulates that the cycling network is to be expanded quickly and systematically on the basis of a new action plan.
Status of the current cycling action plan
The action plan is currently being drawn up and will take into account measures from 2025 onwards. The conceptual approach to drawing up the action plan was discussed in the Cycling Expert Commission on 22.08.2024.
Previous action plans for cycling
Since 2002, planned projects to improve cycling have been prioritized and recorded in a cycling action plan. The plan was updated and updated in 2007. The measures contained in the plan have been implemented since 2009.
