One-way streets
One-way streets usually exist where roads are too narrow for two motor vehicles to meet without problems or where a certain direction of travel is to be prevented for motor vehicles. One-way streets may not be traveled on by bicycle in the opposite direction without an additional sign.
To prevent one-way streets from leading to detours for cyclists or illegal behavior by cyclists, the City of Aachen's Department of Urban Development and Traffic Facilities has been looking for solutions in all streets for many years to allow or "unblock" cycling there. To this end, regular consultations have taken place and continue to take place in order to be able to make decisions based on the respective traffic situation. The issue of safety for cyclists has always been and remains the focus.
By October 2020, 119 of the 175 one-way streets or one-way street sections had already been cleared: As a rule, this is done by placing an additional sign "Cyclists permitted" under the "No entry" sign. In individual cases, cyclists can ride in the opposite direction on a signposted, separate cycle path.
Since then, a further 22 sections in 20 streets have been successively opened to cycle traffic. In the Aachen Mitte district, these are Achterstraße, Alsenstraße, Auf der Hörn, Beginenstraße, Friedlandstraße, Gasborn, Holsteinstraße, Kleverstraße, Matthiashofstraße, Noppiusstraße, Rochusstraße, Sandkaulbach, Schervierstraße, Thomashofstraße, Ungarnstraße, Veltmannplatz and Wirichsbongardstraße. Two sections each of Rochusstrasse and Kleverstrasse were opened.
In Eilendorf, Kehrbrückstraße and in Richterich, Fassinstraße and Martinusstraße were opened to cycle traffic.
As of March 2021, 147 or 84% of one-way streets can be used by cyclists in both directions, making Aachen a little more bicycle-friendly.
Of the remaining 28 one-way streets (16%), only in 11 cases (6%) can no clearance be justified. In the other 17 sections, there is a possibility that these could also be cleared in the future, in some cases with adjustments. These sections remain on the ToDo list.
