Local transport plan

Update of local transport plan

The city of Aachen is updating its local transport plan (NVP) in 2025. The NVP is the framework for the intended development of public transport in Aachen in the coming years. It describes the framework conditions and objectives as well as quality standards. This is followed by an analysis of the current situation and deficiencies. The target concept is derived from this. Both a short-term perspective for 2028 and a longer-term strategy for quality and services are considered.

Status of the line network report

The city of Aachen has had the bus route network examined by an external expert. The report has not yet been completed. According to the conception of two rough variants, the targeted passenger growth of 30% will not be achieved. For this reason, a rough scenario analysis - detached from the previous results - is to be carried out to estimate the conditions under which a 30% increase in passenger numbers could be achieved.

This perspective represents a clearly future-oriented maximum view that takes into account an extensive system change (tram/bus priority axes), an inclusion of the entire commuter areas in the city and region and a settlement structure and spatial development oriented towards this.

For a shorter-term perspective, a further rough variant is being developed with portfolio-oriented network adjustments that do not involve any further system conversion. The measures are based on the current network, with the aim of generating the highest possible passenger growth without focusing on a 30% increase. It is also important to develop infrastructural measures to speed up the bus system and thus make it more attractive. The report is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2025.

Status of barrier-free expansion of bus stops

Local public transport must be accessible for everyone. The city of Aachen is expanding its 994 directional stops according to a priority list.

To ensure barrier-free access to buses, bus stops must have sufficient kerb height, be accessible without steps and have sufficient space for movement. All ASEAG buses are now equipped with low-floor technology and have a fold-out ramp. For visually impaired people, bus stops are being retrofitted with a tactile guidance system in the form of floor indicators. At the end of 2024, 160 (16%) of all stops were fully equipped. A further 17% have been upgraded but are not equipped with guidance elements.
