Aachen aims to be climate-neutral by 2030. Electromobility plays a major role in this project, as CO2 emissions in road traffic cannot be sufficiently reduced by substituting cars with public transport, cycling and walking alone.
To promote electromobility, the plan is to provide a total of EUR 990,000 per year until 2030 for the further expansion of charging infrastructure. The funding program was approved by the City of Aachen's Mobility Committee on 26 June 2025.
The funding program at a glance
Below we have summarized some important points of the funding program for you. Please note that this brief information only provides an overview of the "Aachen goes electric" funding program. You can find the exact conditions for funding and the application process in the relevant funding guidelines.
What are the goals of the funding program?
Development of publicly usable charging infrastructure on private land
As areas in the city's public space are only available to a limited extent for the installation of charging infrastructure, the installation of charging infrastructure on private areas belonging to companies is to be promoted if these are publicly accessible.
Charging infrastructure for fleets
Fleets that are mainly driven in the city area have a relatively large impact on CO2 emissions. Therefore, Aachen-based companies that are converting their fleets to e-cars are to be supported in order to set up charging infrastructure for these vehicles at the company locations.
During the times of day when this charging infrastructure is not used for the fleet vehicles of the respective company, it can in principle also be used by third parties, e.g. by employees and visitors to the company and/or neighbors.
Who is eligible to apply?
- Companies and non-profit organizations that are based in the city of Aachen or have a branch or subsidiary there and have areas that are publicly accessible for cars.
- Companies and non-profit organizations that set up charging infrastructure for their own fleet (minimum size 4 vehicles) on their premises.
- Not eligible to apply: Operators of charging infrastructure. Excluded from this are companies and non-profit organizations that allow residents to use parking spaces on their private land for parking free of charge or for a fee and want to set up and operate publicly usable charging infrastructure on these spaces.
What is supported?
Funding is provided for the installation of charging infrastructure in private parking spaces of the aforementioned eligible applicants.
How much funding is available?
The maximum funding amount depends on the type of charging infrastructure and its capacity per charging point:
Wallboxes AC (<=22kW) | EUR 1,250 per charging point |
AC charging stations (<=22kW) | EUR 2,500 per charging point |
DC charging stations (=>50kW <150kW) | EUR 20,000 per charging station |
HPC charging stations (=>150kW) | EUR 50,000 per charging station |
The maximum total funding (from the City of Aachen and other funding bodies) may not exceed 80% of the total net costs.
How does the application work?
Funding must be applied for using the application form. This must be completed, signed and submitted to Department 68 of the City of Aachen together with the required supporting documents:
E-mail: elektromobilitaet@mail.aachen.de
Please note the deadlines specified in Section 6.b. of the funding guidelines.
What are the requirements and criteria and what information and documents are required for an application?
The City of Aachen examines the applications for funding with regard to various requirements and criteria. Furthermore, various details and documents (e.g. location, details of the applicant, cost estimate) must be submitted (see Sections 7 and 8 of the funding guidelines). There is no entitlement to receive funding, even if all criteria are met.
Can subsidies be reclaimed?
Funding may be reclaimed in whole or in part if the funding recipient violates the provisions of the funding guidelines (see Section 11.).
