Bike station at the main station
Since August 2016, the bike station at the main station has been located at Bahnhofstraße 22, just 150 meters from the previous location. It is operated by WABe e.V., is part of the Diakonisches Netzwerk Aachen and is supported by the city. In the planned "Bluegate" project, the bike station will then be given new premises with up to 400 parking spaces.
On June 27, 2008, a bicycle station was opened for the first time at Aachen Central Station. 158 parking spaces for bicycles now had their place in a former express goods hall of the railroad. After eight years on Zollamtstraße, the WABe e.V. bike station moved in August 2016. On the one hand, this was necessary due to the extremely cramped situation in the old premises, but also due to the new building project on Zollamtstraße. For example, the Deutsche Bahn premises did not have a social room where employees could spend time during breaks. There was also no heating. And the excavators and cranes will be moving in over the next few years. When the "Bluegate" complex is finished, a station with up to 400 bicycle parking spaces will be built there.
The wheel workshop is always on the lookout for used wheels. The WABe has an electric van for this purpose.
Bike workshop and bike station at one location
Until then, the bike station under the management of Frank Schaellenberg and Josef Datenet will be housed under one roof with the WABe bike workshop under the management of Jürgen Aelmanns in a large, bright hall.
The number of parking spaces will increase from 156 to 250. Nothing will change at the bike station: you can still leave your bike there and it will be kept safe and dry. While you are out and about, repairs and maintenance work can also be carried out in the workshop - with very long opening hours: During the week, the bike station opens at 5.30 am and closes at 10.30 pm; on Saturdays and Sundays, the bike station is open from 10 am to 6.30 pm. Guarding costs one euro per day, 12.50 euros per month. Bicycles - eight ladies' and eight men's - as well as 3 pedelecs can also be rented. Used bikes are also available for purchase.
An opportunity for the long-term unemployed and refugees
16 people are employed as part of integration measures, and 12 refugees with the right to stay also work at the bike station. Social worker Ulrike Wichert looks after long-term unemployed people who are back in work, sick people who can only work two to three hours a day and young people who have not yet found an apprenticeship, among others.
Bicycle donations
Anyone who still has an old bicycle that is no longer needed or has usable bicycle parts lying around uselessly in the cellar can contact the WABe association. Bicycles can be collected from your home on request. Individual bicycle parts can be handed in directly to the WABe depot.
