The Solid Fuel Ordinance came into force in Aachen on October 9, 2010. It applies to so-called single-room combustion systems (e.g. wood-burning stoves) that are operated with solid fuels (e.g. wood or coal) and applies throughout the city. The aim was and is to reduce emissions of carbon monoxide and particulate matter and thus improve air quality in the city.
Stoves that were already in operation before the ordinance came into force are considered existing systems. If these did not comply with the prescribed limit values, they had to be retrofitted with filters by December 31, 2014, replaced with new stoves or shut down by December 31, 2014 at the latest. The respective district chimney sweep is responsible for the assessment.
New installations are subject to different limit values. Even though these limit values now apply nationwide (see Federal Immission Control Ordinance (BImSchV)), you should ensure compliance with them when purchasing stoves.
