The city of Aachen is pursuing an active climate protection strategy. Together with politicians, an ambitious program for climate protection has been launched. The joint goal, which was adopted by the city council in 2022 with the approval of the citizens' motion "Aachen climate-neutral 2030", is firmly anchored in the city's society.

Climate protection target and strategy
The Integrated Climate Protection Concept 2.0 includes the city's measures to achieve climate neutrality. The Climate City Agreement drawn up as part of the EU's "100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030" mission provides a tailwind on the road to climate neutrality.
Municipal heat planning
Like all German cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, Aachen is legally obliged to implement a municipal heating plan. This forms the basis for a future-proof and climate-friendly heat supply. Aachen fulfilled this obligation by adopting the Aachen heating plan in July 2025.
Funding programs and support

Achieving the goal of climate neutrality requires a large number of changes. The city of Aachen supports local contributions with various funding programs.
Funding program for energy-saving measures
The funding program for energy-saving measures in buildings promotes energy-efficient renovation work on the building envelope and building technology. This includes, for example, insulating external walls, replacing windows and replacing old gas and oil boilers with heating systems that use renewable energy sources. An energetically renovated house saves energy costs andCO2.

"Roof and façade greening" funding program
On 14.06.2022, the Committee for Climate and Environment of the City of Aachen adopted a program to promote green roofs and façades. The funding supports private and commercial applicants with properties in Aachen. It is also possible for housing associations or tenants to receive funding with the consent of their owner.
