Climate protection is one of the main pillars of the City of Aachen's sustainability strategy. The commitment in this area began 30 years ago. By joining the European Climate Alliance at the beginning of 1992, the City of Aachen committed itself early on to ambitious reduction targets, halving CO2 emissions from 1990 levels by 2020, and aligned its strategies and fields of action accordingly. It is also a member of the EU Commission's climate protection initiatives "Covenant of Mayors" of European cities and "Mayors Adapt".
Strategic projects and initiatives
EU mission "100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030"
The European Union (EU) is supporting a total of 100 cities to become climate-neutral by 2030. The selected cities are to show what is possible.
City contract for a climate-neutral Aachen 2030
The European Commission has awarded the Aachen Climate City Contract the label of the EU mission "100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030".
Climate protection
In addition to its commitment to climate protection, the city of Aachen has also investigated the extent to which climate change is already having an impact locally. Taking climate forecasts into account, it has adopted a concept for adapting to climate change and is continuously implementing the measures listed therein.
Climate adaptation

Adaptation concept
The concept describes how strongly the city of Aachen is affected by climate change and what strategies it is pursuing to combat the dangers of heavy rainfall and increasing heat events.
Dealing with high heat
High temperatures, more frequent and longer heatwaves are increasingly causing health problems among the population in cities and communities, and for some people temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius pose a serious risk.
Funding programs and support
Funding program for energy-saving measures
The funding program for energy-saving measures in buildings promotes energy-efficient renovation work on the building envelope and building technology. This includes, for example, insulating external walls, replacing windows and replacing old gas and oil boilers with heating systems that use renewable energy sources. An energetically renovated house saves energy costs andCO2.
mitgeDACHt funding program
With the housing promotion program "mitgeDACHt", the city of Aachen subsidizes the initial professional consultation for the creation of additional living space through the conversion of unused attic spaces in the city of Aachen with a maximum subsidy of € 1,500. This is intended to counteract the lack of affordable living space in Aachen and make optimum use of the potential for redensification.
Renewable energies

Wind energy
Wind energy is part of the climate-friendly energy mix. New turbines have now been built in Münsterwald (7) and in Laurensberg and Richterich (5).
Hydropower
The groundwater plant in Aachen-Schmithof has been in operation since 1908, and electricity from hydropower has been generated there by a pressure-reducing plant since 1987.
