Urban living with children in Aachen

In surveys on dream homes, the desire for a detached house in the countryside remains widespread in Germany. Moving from the city to a detached house with a garden, swing set and sandpit in the countryside to live with children was and still is a strong leitmotif for parts of the population. Even if home ownership has always only really been feasible for a part of the population, it initially leaves little room for other forms of needs-based living with children.

However, living with children has always been more diverse and has always taken place in dense, urban areas. In terms of urban development policy, living with children in urban areas should be seen as an important contribution to the social and sustainable mix in the city and the creation of long-term, stable resident structures and (supply) services.

This shows that living with children is more diverse and also takes place in urban, densely populated areas. As "urban villages", cities like Aachen offer numerous advantages for families. However, targeted measures are needed to ensure that families can live in the city: In addition to the construction of sufficient multi-room apartments, investors should be advised on the housing mix and landlords should be sensitized to family-friendly allocation practices. In this way, a social and sustainable mix in the city can be strengthened in the long term.
