"It is very important that every child, regardless of what they currently have in their backpack, has the best chance to grow and flourish and become a strong personality. And this is particularly important to us as a city - naturally as part of our responsibility to the people in this city. Aachen is family-friendly. Aachen is child-friendly." - Lord Mayor Sibylle Keupen
What is a prevention chain?
It is a sustainable network for children, young people and parents. The specialists work together to ensure that families receive the right help, encouragement and support quickly and easily. It strengthens and networks the existing services, programs and institutions in Aachen that support families, children and young people in the various phases of life, and in this way builds a chain of prevention. It is very important that support is not just limited to children, but also includes their parents. To ensure that the interaction works well and transitions are successful, there are network coordinators for the prevention chain in the administration of the city of Aachen, where the threads come together. This coordination office is the driving force behind the prevention chain. It identifies gaps in the support system, develops answers to challenges, establishes links to existing services, carries out needs assessments and action planning, applies for projects and implements them. The prevention unit is part of the Department for Children, Youth and Schools, Youth Division.

The prevention chain in Aachen
Financial difficulties, overwork, sick children or children at risk of disability, educational difficulties, isolation and other challenging life situations characterize the lives of families. This is where the city of Aachen wants to provide support, guidance and services. These services are free of charge and easily accessible for all families. At the planning level, health planning, youth welfare planning and social planning work together to provide tailor-made services in different social areas. Many Aachen institutions and facilities are involved in the implementation.
The following state programs, which are implemented by the youth welfare office and independent providers, are examples of offers within the Aachen prevention chain:
Early help
Early help includes all services from pregnancy to a child's 4th birthday. These include advice and support for parents and families to strengthen their relationship and care skills. They are voluntary, low-threshold and free of charge. All services are integrated into a large network so that individual support can be found for individual issues.
Starting with the visiting service for parents of newborns , through a wide range of courses and counseling services to support from health professionals (family midwives and family pediatric nurses), families will find many different options for individual challenges.

Specialist advice on parent education and advice in regular systems
All families should have easy access to the support systems. To achieve this goal, the specialist advice centre organizes further training and networking events for professionals and initiates projects.
For example, the following project is currently being implemented:
Project "Parents get involved - participation means change."
Together with the project sponsor Elternnetzwerk NRW e.V., the city of Aachen has trained parent moderators who organize information events for interested parents and inform them about the German education system and the topic of parental involvement. The aim is to promote the participation and involvement of immigrant parents in particular in educational institutions such as daycare centers and schools.
