"I am delighted that Black Semiconductor's decision in favor of Aachen as a location means that further decisive steps towards the future are now being taken from Aachen," says Dieter M. Begaß, Head of the Aachen Economic Development Agency. "The settlement is not only a technological milestone for the location, but also creates a large number of future-oriented, high-quality jobs in Aachen. These new jobs not only offer our skilled workers career prospects, but also attract talent from the entire region and thus strengthen the economic basis of our city in the long term. The project is an important signal for Aachen Rothe Erde, which can present itself as a visionary model location for urban production in global competition with this future technology. The new headquarters will have 15,000 square metres of production space for clean room and infrastructure construction as well as office space for 120 employees.
Black Semiconductor uses the groundbreaking graphene technology that will revolutionize microelectronics and whose basis was researched at the Aachen Institute of Nanotechnology. In June 2024, the company, which was founded in 2020, received a total of 254.4 million euros in funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, making it one of the largest financings for a deep-tech company in Europe to date.
With the establishment of FabONE, Black Semiconductor is not only strengthening Aachen as a business location, but also Europe's position in this strategic industry. Thomas Hissel, Head of Economic Affairs, also praises this importance: "Black Semiconductor is a special success story from Aachen, which has come about thanks to the optimal conditions at our business and science location. Excellent research, a lively ecosystem for innovative ideas and comprehensive start-up support form the basis here. The fact that this innovation from Aachen will be implemented shows the importance of the location for pioneering technologies and the microelectronics sector throughout Europe."
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Black Semiconductor and TRIWO AG for their close cooperation with us as the economic development agency of the city of Aachen!
