Act correctly in an emergency

The current situation with the war in Ukraine and the associated energy supply issues is raising legitimate questions among many people about what they can do in an emergency and how they can prepare for emergency situations. The floods and coronavirus pandemic have shown how important it is to take precautions and act correctly.

Even if many cases are unlikely and we in Aachen are well prepared for a wide range of crisis situations, it is the task and responsibility of each individual to take precautions and know the framework conditions.

Disaster control lighthouses

Emergency call points

In the event of a large-scale power outage and an emergency call failure, for example, locations are defined that serve as emergency notification points for citizens. Emergency calls can be made at these decentralized "lighthouses" - in many places docked to equipment depots, stations and contact points of the fire department and police - in the event of a disaster and especially if established communication channels such as telephone, internet and mobile communications are interrupted. They can also be mobile lighthouses, such as fire engines, which serve as contact points at defined locations.

Sirens

Population warning by the Aachen fire department

The city of Aachen has a siren system to warn citizens in the danger zone. The loud sound of a siren is an effective means of at least clearly audibly indicating the existence of danger to people in the vicinity. Only if you are aware of the danger can you use the media to obtain important information on the correct behavior and the danger situation.
