All people have a right
to suitable housing.
But often people
cannot afford to pay for housing.
The state helps these people with money.
This money is called housing money.

you must submit an application.

  • Who gets housing money?

    People with little money can get
    housing-money.

  • Who doesn't get housing money?

    Some people already receive
    money from the state.
    They receive basic income support from the job center.
    These people do not receive housing benefit.
    Because the job center pays for their apartment.

  • If you live in a rented apartment

    You live in a rented apartment
    and have little money.
    Then you can get housing benefit.
    You can use the housing benefit to pay part of your rent at

    This is called a rent subsidy.

  • If you live in your own home

    It is often like this:
    You live in your own house or
    in your own apartment.
    You have borrowed the money for this from the bank.
    Now you pay money to a bank every month.
    Because the house or apartment
    is not yet fully paid for.
    This is also called:
    There is still a charge on the house.
    If you can no longer pay the charges:
    Then you can also get housing benefit.
    This allows you to pay part of the charges.
    This is called a burden allowance.

  • How do you get housing money?

    You must submit an application for housing benefit
    to the office.
    The office then decides

    • whether you receive housing benefit
    • how much housing benefit you receive.

    The best way to do this is as follows:

    Then fill out the form.

    The office needs a lot of information from you.

    How much rent do you pay each month?

    Please write in the application form

    • the cold rent from the apartment.
      This is the rent without the costs for heating.
    • the operating costs of the apartment.
      This includes, for example, the money for garbage collection.

    Please enclose a copy of the rental agreement with the application as proof.

    You live in your own home

    Please write in the application:
    This is what you pay each month for the mortgage on the house.
    Please enclose a certificate from your bank with the application.

    You will receive the certificate from your bank.

    How much income do you have?

    Income includes, for example

    • Money you earn
    • a pension
    • if you receive rent for another apartment
    • Parental allowance
    • Sickness benefit

    Please note:
    You must provide proof of all your income.
    For example:
    With a certificate of earnings from your employer.


    Who lives in your household?

    Please write in the application:
    These persons live in my household.

    Attention:

    You must have a relationship with the persons.
    The household includes, for example

    • Marriage partner
    • Children
    • Parents.

    But: For example, students in a shared flat
    are not part of a household.

  • When the application is ready

  • The housing benefit notice

    The office checks the application.
    The office decides
    whether you will receive housing benefit.

    The office will then send you the housing benefit notification to

    The notice states

    • how much housing benefit you receive
    • When you start receiving housing benefit
    • how long you will receive housing benefit.

    This is usually the case:
    You will receive the housing benefit from the month
    in which you submit your application.

    Here is an example:
    You submit the application in May.
    Then you will receive the housing benefit from May.
    You will usually receive the housing benefit for 12 months.
    This is stated in the notification.

    The housing benefit notice also states:
    When you have to submit a new application.
    So that you continue to receive housing benefit after the 12 months.

  • When something changes

    • You have a new job
    • and earn more money.
    • A child has moved out of the apartment.
    • You have moved.

    You must report this to the office.
