Why do you need an ID card?

From the age of 16,
you must have a valid ID card.
This is called:
Personal-Ausweis-Pflicht.
Only German citizens are issued with an ID card.
There are also other forms of ID.

For example

  • the Children's Travel Pass
  • the passport

You always need 1 ID card with all your personal details.

  • The new ID card

    The photo costs €4.50.

      Then you pay 52.80 euros
      for the ID card.
    • You are 24 years old or older.
      Then you pay 67.00 euros
      for the ID card.

    How can you pay?

  • How long is the ID card valid for?

    The card is valid for persons
    up to 23 years: for 6 years
    from 24 years: for 10 years

  • You have lost your ID card or your ID card is no longer valid

    Your ID card is no longer valid:
    You can then obtain a special ID card from us.
    This ID card is also called a temporary ID card.
    You must also apply for this ID cardat the Citizens' Service

    The temporary ID card does not have any online functions.
    You can then take this ID card with you immediately.
