Important certificates

Every new-born child
receives a birth certificate.
This is written on the birth certificate:

• The first name and the name of the child.
• The names of the parents.
• The day of birth.
• The place of birth.
• The religion. Catholic, for example.
  
  

You need the birth certificate, for example

• for the child's ID card
• to enroll the child in school
• for health insurance
• for the Finance Office
• if the child wants to marry later

The wedding couple receives a marriage certificate.
The certificate states
that you are officially married.
The marriage certificate states

• the names of the spouses
• the wedding venue
• the wedding date
• the signature of the registrar
• If you have witnesses to the marriage:
  The signatures of the witnesses to the marriage

You need the marriage certificate, for example

• for the employer-donor
• for health insurance
• for the Finance Office
• for a new passport.

Before 2017, only men and women could marry in Germany
. However,
female couples or male couples
could marry each other.

This was accompanied by the civil partnership certificate.
It states

• the names of the life partners
  before the marriage
• the names of the life partners
  after the marriage
• the partnering location
• the date of marriage
• the birth data of the life partners
• the birthplaces of the life partners
• the signature of the registrar
• If there were witnesses at the marriage:
  The signatures of the witnesses.

You need the civil partnership certificate, for example

• for the employer-donor
• for health insurance
• for the Finance Office
• for a new passport

When a person dies
there is a death certificate.
This is written in the death certificate:

• The name of the dead man
• when he died
• where he died
• his last address
• his day of birth
• his place of birth
• his religion
• his marital status
  For example
  whether he was married.
  Then the death certificate
  also contains the name of the spouse
  
  

You need the death certificate, for example

• for life insurance
• if there is an inheritance
• for the pension from the wife

You can obtain all civil status documents
from the registry office.

Enclose a copy of your passport in the letter.
If you apply for the certificate online:
Scan in your passport.
