The baptistery of the cathedral and its archaeological excavation area
St. Johannes Baptist, or simply Baptistery, was first mentioned in 1215. The walls reveal Romanesque and Gothic origins. The completion date of the Baroque remodeling in 1766 is indicated above the door. However, the Carolingian buildings are more than 400 years older. The Roman buildings in the area around the cathedral are also known to us.
The history of the place is therefore much older than the year 1215 suggests. What lies beneath the baptistery? What was there before the chapel was built?
On Open Monument Day, the cathedral chapter opens up the baptistery in guided tours to allow visitors to experience the new findings.
