Episcopal Academy - a place of eventful history

Anna Braun-Sittarz began her career as a weaver at the Delius cloth factory, which owned the property and villa that stood where the Bischof-Hemmerle-Haus, part of the Aachen Diocese Academy, is located today until it was destroyed in 1944.

Anna Braun-Sittarz was a member of the city council in the 1920s, and in 1929 she opened a dairy on Karlsgraben, which became a meeting place and reloading point for resistance material during the National Socialist era. In 1937, she was sentenced to prison for high treason; the Gestapo kept an eye on her, but she continued to stand up for the persecuted. After the liberation of Aachen, she was involved in the first German trade union foundation, in Aachen in 1945.

After a Eucharistic celebration at 9.30 a.m. with the worker priest Albert Koolen, Linda Aach will give an introduction to the life and political work of Anna Braun-Sittarz, followed by an opportunity for discussion (10.30 a.m., 1.30 p.m. and 4.00 p.m.).

Representatives of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus and the Poor Sisters of St. Francis will provide insights into the founding of their orders by Clara Fey and Franziska Schervier in response to the social question in the 19th century (11.30 a.m.).

A cultural program element is planned for 3 p.m.

Tours as required during opening hours.
