Aachen's historic canal system - into the underground with rubber boots

Aachen's historic canal system - into the underground with rubber boots
At the end of the 19th century, Aachen's streams were converted into a system of stream channels, as pathogenic pollution from industry and households in particular posed a health risk. For this purpose, "double tunnels" were built: Dirty water is drained in the lower one, while clear stream water flows at the top. The vaults made of smoothly grouted clinker bricks are so carefully constructed that they are still in service some 120 years after their construction.
A section of an upper, clean stream channel is made accessible. This requires dry weather conditions, sufficient physical agility, knee-high wellies and robust clothing.
Unfortunately, the tour is not barrier-free. Confirmed registration with the first and last names of all participants is required for participation.
