Located in the north-west of Aachen, the district of Aachen-Richterich borders the town of Herzogenrath and the Netherlands. The oldest castle in Aachen, Schönau Castle, can be found here, as well as a moated castle and the church of St. Martinius with the oldest organ in Aachen.

I would like to welcome you to the website of our Richterich-Horbach district.
The districts of Richterich and Horbach can look back on a rich history and until 1972 Richterich was an independent, agricultural community that became part of the city of Aachen as part of the municipal reorganization.
Thanks to forward-looking decisions - such as the acquisition of Schönau Castle and the planning of new residential areas - Richterich has developed into an attractive place to live for young and old. The diversity of the Horbach district, generous green spaces and a successful mix of rural and urban life characterize our district.
Around 9600 people of different ages and nationalities currently live peacefully together in our district. Even though this makes us the smallest of Aachen's districts in terms of population, we have enormous development potential and a lot to offer. For the first time in the history of the district, the "Richterich Perspective" is a long-term development plan for the various areas of life: Childcare, schools, housing, work, commerce, senior-friendly housing, mobility and infrastructure, to give just a brief overview.
An active club life, diverse cultural, religious and sporting activities, educational facilities close to home and a good infrastructure make Richterich a lively and liveable district.

Richterich is home to the oldest castle in Aachen, Schloss Schönau (left), and the moated castle Haus Heyden in Horbach. The people of Richterich benefit from the fast connections to Aachen and Herzogenrath as well as to the Netherlands.
Richterich is a good place to live with children, the traffic is still manageable and there are no anonymous housing estates. The surrounding fields are ideal for cycling tours and hikes.

Wasserburg Haus Heyden
The ruins of Wasserburg Haus Heyden, the most imposing castle of its kind in the Aachen region in the Middle Ages.
Today, the castle is privately owned.

Richterich offers comprehensive local supply centers in its Roder Weg commercial area as well as around the town hall square at the Schlosspark. These are rounded off by retail outlets with stores for daily needs.

The weekly market takes place on Wednesdays from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm on the town hall square.
Local supply in Horbach
There is also a fresh produce stand in Horbach on Fridays from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the square next to the youth center on Oberdorfstraße. In addition, a bakery as well as farms in the area, which offer fresh fruit and vegetables in their farm stores, strengthen the range.
Richterich and Horbach have their roots in ancient times. It is not possible to find out exactly when the villages were founded. However, it is assumed that the history of the municipality goes back to the years before the turn of time, as the name refers to a Celtic settlement.

The history of customs from a source of income to the protection of the domestic economy: borders, the German Customs Union of 1834, the work and tasks of customs between smuggling, species protection and brand piracy. The customs museum's 22 rooms and around 3,000 exhibits trace the history of customs duties and their development from a source of income to protection for the domestic economy.
Peter-Schwarzenberg-Halle
The Peter-Schwarzenberg-Halle, which is also a gymnasium in Richterich, is available to clubs in the district for events for up to 300 people, such as carnival sessions, shooting festivals, Christmas markets and concerts. It is rented out via the Richterich district office.

Schönau Castle Community Center
The Schönau Castle Community Center hosts concerts, lectures, exhibitions and courses. These rooms, as well as the castle's outer bailey, can be rented from the Richterich district office. The Schloss Schönau restaurant is located in part of the premises.
Associations, foundations and other cultural institutions offer the citizens of Richterich a wide range of opportunities to promote and experience culture in the district.
In Richterich, various clubs and sports facilities offer a wide range of activities such as gymnastics, rugby, soccer and more.
Whether young or old: Richterich offers play and leisure facilities for every age group.
Vision. A privilege that the residents of Richterich and Horbach can always claim for themselves. Open fields and expansive farmland allow your gaze to wander unhindered into the distance. Comfortable paths invite you to take a sporty or leisurely stroll. Let yourself be carried along by the wind, which - as the nearby wind turbines in Vetschau prove - almost always has a home game here. And with a clear head and a keen eye, you can discover many a special feature close to your own front door.
The district working group for older people in Richterich looks after the services for senior citizens in the district.
In Richterich, customs are cultivated not only by two carnival clubs, but also by a shooting fraternity, a men's choir and an instrumental club.
