Kornelimünster/Walheim district

Councillor von Thenen warmly welcomes you as district mayor to Kornelimünster-Walheim. Kornelimünster-Walheim is located in the south of Aachen, directly on the border with Belgium and at the foot of the Eifel, surrounded by fields and hills in a densely wooded landscape. It was only with the municipal reorganization in 1972 that the previously independent municipalities became one urban district, which also includes the villages of Friesenrath, Hahn, Oberforstbach, Nütheim, Schleckheim, Schmithof, (former municipality of Walheim) Sief and Lichtenbusch.

The district office is based in Kornelimünster. Including all the villages, Kornelimünster-Walheim currently has a population of around 16,300. The former municipality of Kornelimünster also included Breinig, Breinigerberg, Vicht-Breinigerberg, Münsterau and Venwegen, which were assigned to Stolberg in 1972.

  • Life and living in the "Münsterländchen" today

Today's "Münsterländchen" has become an attractive and popular place to live, even for newcomers. Those who live here are surrounded by nature and often see happy cows grazing peacefully on lush meadows outside their own window. Nevertheless, much has changed rapidly in recent decades. Some of the villages that used to be so quiet and dreamy now have a suburban atmosphere.
However, their offerings and infrastructure are very different. While Kornelimünster still lacks convenient shopping facilities, especially a large grocery store, Walheim is well equipped with well-stocked retail outlets that are ideal for both quick shopping and leisurely shopping. Walheim's shopping mile "Prämienstraße" embodies what pleasant and convenient shopping is all about: here you will find everything the whole family needs for everyday life, from bakers and butchers to stationers and bookshops, from the post office to the savings bank to the bank, from travel agencies to opticians and much more, making tiresome trips into town a thing of the past. Walheim also impresses with its recreational area, which is well known throughout the city.

Kornelimünster, with its churches and old town houses, the former monastery and today's museum, is well worth a visit. Important art treasures, the "Historical Fair" in June, the Korneli Octave in September and the Christmas market are all reasons to visit the pilgrimage site. The pubs in the romantic alleyways attract walkers and visitors.

And anyone who has not yet been to Lichtenbusch to buy Leonidas - Belgium's delicious pralines - should definitely do so.
Every place in the district has its own charm and attractions that are well worth a visit.
There are good transport links in all directions: to the city center, to the Euregional cities, to the Eifel - even Cologne is easy to reach by car. Young families in particular are therefore increasingly drawn to the suburban location in the countryside. The development of further residential areas, particularly in Kornelimünster and Lichtenbusch, underlines the current importance of the district as an influx area. This is due not least to a family-friendly infrastructure - including nurseries, schools, sports clubs, playgrounds and a wide range of leisure activities in the immediate vicinity.

  • Local recreation on the doorstep: Klauserwald, Indetal and Itertal

Kornelimünster/Walheim is embedded in a nature and landscape conservation area. In the immediate vicinity, there is a near-natural high forest on the limestone cliffs on both sides of the Inde: the wild and romantic "Klauserwäldchen", Aachen's oldest nature reserve.
In 2002, the Indetal valley was finally declared a nature reserve. The largely unobstructed course of the Inde river with its accompanying copses and small woodlands, as well as the many wet meadows and wet meadows, are unique. Little owls still breed on the slopes of the Inde valley with its orchards and hedgerows. Kingfishers and dippers are also at home here.
The varied cultural landscape of the Inde and Itertal valleys in Walheim, into which the hiking trails running along the slopes repeatedly provide a charming insight, invites hikers and walkers from young to old to enjoy the fresh air.
Kornelimünster/Walheim lies on the northern edge of the Eifel. In particular, the North Eifel nature reserve and the High Fens (Venn = moor) offer exciting hikes and nature explorations.
The town of Monschau is 20 km to the south and Eupen, the capital of the German-speaking community in Belgium, around 15 km to the southwest. The Maas metropolis of Maastricht can be reached in half an hour via the highway.
Further information on weekend and vacation sites in the nearby Eifel villages (e.g. Roetgen) can be found on the website of the Förderkreis Abteigarten Kornelimünster. From there, marked hiking trails lead into the "green".

Further information can be found in the flyer Ganz schön nah - Natur erleben in Kornelimünster und Walheim.

  • Popular cycling and hiking trail: the Vennbahn route

Even today, many locals still have fond memories of their trips on the former Vennbahn. Commissioned in 1885, it opened up the Eifel region to the local population for over a century. During the First World War, the Vennbahn served as a vital transport line for the deployment of the army. After the end of the Second World War, its fate was decided. Having become more and more irrelevant economically and now cut through by national borders, it lost its regional and interregional function. Freight trains continued to run to Brand station until 1984, when this line was also finally closed. Since then, the Vennbahn route has been used as a cycle and hiking trail. This car-free transport link between Eilendorf, Brand and Kornelimünster through Niederforstbach via the scenic Rollefbachtal valley with its viaduct is now a valuable part of local and regional leisure and local recreation.

The former Kornelimünster railroad station is now run as a restaurant and is a popular place for cyclists, skaters and hikers to stop off, especially in summer. The Vennbahn route was extended from Kornelimünster (viaduct) to Walheim in 2005.

  • Pascalstraße - Aachen-Süd industrial estate

Pascalstrasse in Oberforstbach is home to a number of national and even global companies, such as the software pioneer Gypsilon Software and the service companies ComConsult and Atos Origin. A large number of small and medium-sized companies have also settled in the Aachen-Süd industrial estate between Nerscheider Weg and Pascalstraße over the last 30 years. Thanks to the diversity and innovation of these companies, a modern high-tech center has developed here in a rural area.

  • Places of interest

Largely spared from the great wars, Kornelimünster's townscape is still characterized by 17th and 18th century town houses. The Varnenum, a Gallo-Roman place of worship, as well as churches, monasteries and chapels are just some of the sights in the Kornelimünster / Walheim district.
