  • Welcome to Haaren!

Dear fellow citizens and visitors to the Haaren district website,

Thank you for your interest in the Haaren district and its many facets!

I can promise you one thing - the district in the north-east of Aachen, consisting of the districts of Haaren and Verlautenheide, has not only undergone an exciting historical development, but also has a lot to offer from today's perspective:

An intact club life, numerous everyday amenities, two large industrial estates with businesses from various sectors, medical and social facilities as well as a wide range of cultural and sporting activities.

Not to be forgotten is also the extremely good connection to the highway, the short distances to Aachen's city center and the close frequency of local public transport.

Due to its proximity to Jülicher Straße and the industrial plants that existed there at the time, many workers initially lived in Haaren in the past. Newly created residential areas and the development of good and nearby amenities quickly made the district an attractive place to live for young families too. The two districts now have a combined population of over 12,000, around a quarter of whom live in Verlautenheide. And the number continues to grow.

The positive development of the district is due in part to the Haarener Interessengemeinschaft Haarener Vereine, which bundles and coordinates the interests of members in Haaren and Verlautenheide and then represents them to the city and politicians.

You can also address your own interests and concerns to the administration. The district office in Haaren is always at your disposal for this purpose. The staff will be happy to help you unbureaucratically with concerns of any kind and stand for a citizen-oriented and agile administration.

Finally, I would like to invite you to visit our district. The highest point of the village is the Haarberg with the Haarener Kreuz at an altitude of almost 239 meters. A popular excursion destination with a magnificent panoramic view over the Aachen region!

    With best regards

    Daniel Hecker
    District Mayor

  • Urban development

An integrated action plan as a planning and control instrument is a prerequisite for urban development funding. This enables the development of the Haaren district to be viewed holistically and specific measures to be implemented, taking into account economic, social and ecological conditions.

To this end, the following six fields of action were identified:

    • Field of action I : Urban design and urban development
    • Field of action II: Housing and living environment
    • Field of action III: Retail, gastronomy, services and trade
    • Field of action IV: Transport and mobility
    • Field of action V: Open space, environment and climate
    • Field of action VI : Living together in the district

More information and the action plans can be found under Haaren urban development.

The coat of arms of Haaren

Aristocratic coats of arms have been known since the Crusades, bourgeois and municipal coats of arms since the 13th century. At this time, municipalities usually did not have coats of arms as they were often dependent on sovereigns or larger cities.

It was not until 1945 that the new self-administration of municipalities meant that coats of arms were also used by self-confident municipalities. The Haaren municipality has been using its coat of arms since 1950. It consists of a divided shield, which shows a red-tipped black eagle with a red beak on a golden background in the upper part and a green three-leaf clover in a red field in the lower part. The eagle represents the free imperial city of Aachen and since Haaren belonged continuously as a quarter to the imperial city of Aachen, this should be indicated by the eagle.

The three-leaf clover can be traced back to the coat of arms of the von Pastor family from Aachen. The distinguished family was famous in Aachen in the Middle Ages and the progenitor of the family, Johann Pastor von Haaren, was born in Haaren around 1390. Haaren has borne this coat of arms since it was certified by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia in June 1950.

  • Experience nature

Despite the surrounding highways, the Haarberg has become a popular leisure destination with walking and cycling trails that are perfect for a day trip. From the Haarener Kreuz you have a wonderful view as far as the Netherlands and Belgium. Thanks to the "Ecological Initiative", the once bare hill is slowly recovering. Old sightlines and paths have been cleared, native gorse and hornbeams have been planted and the numerous fruit trees form Aachen's largest orchard.

The Haarbach stream has also become a bubbling habitat for small fish, amphibians and bird species again since it was restored to its natural state in 2000. Among the returning species is the rare kingfisher.

Further information can be found in the flyer "Quite close! Experience nature in Haaren".
