Award for integration through sport
The city of Aachen stands for the integration of people of foreign origin and promotes their participation in social life in the city by various means. As part of the integration concept adopted by the city council in October 2006, many institutions work together to provide language support, education and advice for people with a migration background. In addition, associations and charitable organizations also work very successfully in the integration network. These include the local sports clubs.
Sport creates a variety of opportunities for integration, encounters and understanding with people with and without a migration background, builds bridges between cultures and creates a sense of community. Above all, sport offers children and young people, girls and boys alike, many opportunities in organized club life to spend their free time in a meaningful way and to recognize their individual strengths. Sport demonstrates values that make it so universal: Respect, tolerance, peace, solidarity and justice.
Sport contributes to a culture of respect for others and personal responsibility and appeals to people from different cultures. Sport promotes social peace and peaceful coexistence as well as mutual help and trust. Sport contributes to a culture of fair play and social participation.
For integration through sport to succeed, it is crucial that those responsible in politics, society and in sports clubs, that people of all cultures, with and without a migration background, recognize the integrative function of sport and support and implement it sustainably.
The city's "Integration through Sport" award was presented for the 13th time in 2023.
