Aachen: A brief portrait

Charlemagne, the world heritage cathedral, a university of excellence as the driving force behind one of the largest research landscapes in Europe: Aachen is a city with a great history and a signpost to the future, with many cosmopolitan young people, metropolitan amenities and pleasantly short distances.

The Celts and Romans already appreciated the local hot springs. However, it was Charlemagne who gave the city historical significance. In the early Middle Ages, he made Aachen his favorite palace and the first capital of his European empire. Aachen Cathedral is a spiritual expression of this former greatness and Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 1949, the International Charlemagne Prize has been awarded in the former imperial palace, an award that honors services to the unification and unity of the European continent in the style of Charlemagne.

But for Aachen, Europe is much more than high politics. In the border region with Belgium and the Netherlands, people live a relaxed, borderless everyday life. Living, working, studying and shopping in three countries is a matter of course. A lively European microcosm.

Aachen has more than 250,000 inhabitants from 160 nations, including 60,000 students. The many young people shape the image of the city, its way of life, its cosmopolitanism and its culture. There is no shortage of cultural offerings. Renowned museums, committed theater work, a wide variety of musical events and the renowned Schrittmacher dance festival all contribute to this. The picturesque old town, the famous Aachen Printen, the atmospheric Christmas market around the cathedral and town hall and the CHIO international horse show attract visitors from all over the world every year.

Aachen is a laboratory for the future. The entire city ticks to the rhythm of universities and research. RWTH Aachen University, a university of excellence in research and teaching, FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Fraunhofer, Leibniz and Helmholtz Institutes stand for scientific creativity, technological innovation and social progress. One of the largest research landscapes in Europe is visibly taking shape on the RWTH Aachen Campus. This also benefits the economy. Universities and companies work closely together in forums and networks, in spin-offs and start-ups.

And what do the many scientists and researchers do when they have finished their work in the future lab? If they don't go for a quick jog through the Aachen forest, they go for a walk in the city and enjoy a relaxed evening - perhaps with a view of the town hall or cathedral.
