Streets are named exclusively in the public interest.
In NRW, the naming of streets, paths and squares is a matter for the local authority.
The street name, like the name of the city or town, is used for orientation. It is intended to ensure that the desired destination can be clearly identified or located within a populated area.
In Aachen, streets of district significance are named by the respective district council, while streets of supra-district significance are named by the city council.
There are around 1570 named streets in Aachen.
The Department of Geoinformation and Land Planning is currently digitizing the information on the naming and meaning of street names. This information is gradually being published in the geodata portal and can be called up in this system by entering the street name.
Search in the street name information in the geodata portal
If you are looking for a specific street, simply click here. You will now be directed to the geodata portal. Enter the desired street name in the search field (top left), click on the "Street names" tab in the window that opens and then on the street name in the subsequent window. A map window opens in which the street area of the street you are looking for is marked. Another window displays information on the street name and the meaning of the street name.
Note: If no information on a street has yet been recorded in the geodata portal, the street area will not be marked and the information window will indicate that the street name is being processed.
