The overall project

Between Krefelder Straße as the northern entrance axis towards the city center and the Soers landscape, the Soers sports park forms an identity-forming area for many Aacheners due to its past and present sports history. The sporting events held there also have a strong appeal far beyond the city limits. Building on the existing club and professional sports structures, the areas already offer potential that needs to be further developed.

The sports park is currently unable to fully exploit its potential in terms of meeting the demand for activity areas and recreational opportunities for the city's population as a whole. The reasons for this lie partly in the existing spatial structure of the area and partly in the lack of connection to the rest of the city. The non-existent or limited opportunities for practising informal and non-club sports can also be cited as a reason for its isolated status.
Many citizens would describe the Soers sports park as an "island" within the city, which is only worth visiting for special events such as the annual CHIO equestrian tournament or Alemania Aachen soccer matches.

The aim of restructuring the sports park is to create a place for everyone. The citizens of Aachen should perceive the area as an integral part of their city, where people enjoy spending time and which offers space for activities of all kinds. Good accessibility through sustainable mobility options within the urban area, but also from outside, should provide a framework for the implementation of these aspirations.

The desired objectives are linked to specific changes in private and public spaces within the plan area. Open spaces and buildings are to be developed as part of future-oriented concepts in such a way that they guarantee attractive outdoor and indoor areas for the practice of sporting activities at different levels for current and future generations. In addition to the topic of new construction, the topics of conversion and redesign of the existing will play an important role. The aim is to create places to spend time that the citizens of Aachen can identify with.

Sustainability on three levels is directly linked to the issue of future viability: Socially, ecologically and economically, the sports park must remain functional for the future. In view of the many uncertainties looming in almost all areas of development, aspects of multifunctionality, flexibility and the ability to react to changing circumstances are important basic ideas of development.

Many processes, some of which are running in parallel, make the new development of the Soers Sports Park a very complex project that will develop in several phases. As a large part of the space is linked to already established important events and activities that contribute significantly to the image of the city of Aachen, the involvement of current and future user groups is one of the most important tasks for the coming years of restructuring.
