Shared footpath and cycle path

It is not always possible to route bicycle and pedestrian traffic separately in Aachen for various reasons - e.g. spatial, infrastructural, network planning. Here, traffic signs 240 "Special route for pedestrians and cyclists" are used to guide people on foot and on bicycles equally along the same route.

Nevertheless, the speed of cyclists and pedestrians is different - the so-called "speed difference" is large: cyclists are usually faster, which is why pedestrians can feel endangered by cyclists.

A considerate coexistence of pedestrians and cyclists is therefore particularly important here in order to allow both types of traffic to use these often valuable sections of the route network.

Cyclists should therefore pass pedestrians slowly and at a distance.
Pedestrians should allow cyclists to pass them.

If coexistence does not work, the only alternative on these stretches of road is to ban the use of one of the two modes of transport - detours are then necessary.
