05/2022: Information media in cycle streets
"What actually applies in cycle lanes?" This question has been increasingly put to Aachen city council since cycling traffic in Aachen (preferably on Aachen's priority cycle routes) has been routed on cycle lanes.
In an intensive coordination process, three information media were therefore developed, with the help of which the motifs for information about the top 3 rules in cycle streets will be brought into the public space with immediate effect: Tension tape, boards (DIN A2) and postcards.
On 12.05.2022, these information carriers were installed on Marktstraße and Wolferskaul in Aachen-Brand as a premiere for Aachen with the kind support of Aachener Stadtbetrieb.
They communicate that the following applies in cycle lanes
- Permitted maximum speed 30km/h,
- Cyclists may ride side by side,
- vehicles, motorcycles, etc. are permitted as guests.
The information carriers are to be hung in newly established cycle lanes for 6 - 8 weeks and draw attention to the changed situation. At the end of this period, they will be dismantled and installed in the next newly established cycle lane. With the help of this "walking information", the city of Aachen is taking account of the realization that mere signage in accordance with the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) is obviously not sufficient to inform road users about the rules associated with this designation. Knowledge of the rules is fundamentally important for increasing road safety.
