01/2024: Information signs at roadworks "Roadworks! Dismount - push - walk"
Reality shows that cyclists want to ride. That is completely understandable. But unfortunately, they also want to do so in situations where riding is temporarily prohibited for good reason: at roadworks. This is why the city of Aachen has been using new signage since 28.03.2024. At roadworks where cycling is temporarily prohibited, this appeals to cyclists to adhere to the driving ban.
Construction site! Dismount - push - walk
The new signs are used at the start of roadworks where the roadway becomes impassable for moving traffic and it is not a safe alternative to use the sidewalk.
Illegal rolling on the sidewalk in the side space is prohibited here for good reason with VZ 250 "Prohibition for vehicles of all kinds":
Cycling in confined spaces harasses, annoys and endangers people on foot - older people, people with and without disabilities and with and without baby carriages.
It also stresses out construction workers because those working with swing-out excavators and heavy equipment assume that the designated traffic rules will be observed. They do not expect cyclists.
Failure to comply with the rules at the end of the wheel can have serious consequences for everyone.
The new information signage will be installed for the duration of the construction work. Where the legal situation is actually clear (a footpath is and remains a pedestrian path), it supplements the signage that complies with the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) and once again makes an urgent appeal to those who disregard it without authorization to behave in accordance with the rules and dismount.
As space is scarce at roadworks, the motif was designed to fit into narrow clearance gauges. For reasons of simpler production and standardized quality, the format of a beacon (W=250 x H=1,000 mm) was chosen, which is printed with the Aachen-specific motif from the city of Aachen's road safety campaign AChtsam-unterwegs.
The signs celebrate their premiere in Südstraße, Habsburgerallee and Stromgasse. Once the work is complete, they will move on.
