11/2021: Overtaking distance "Cooperation with Aachen University of Applied Sciences"
In the winter semester 2021/22, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Aachen University of Applied Sciences , under the direction of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Felix Hüning, in cooperation with the City of Aachen, announced a student research project on the topic of "Distance detection for cars and bicycles". The aim was to develop a tool that could be used to measure the distance at which a car overtakes a bicycle.
Experience shows that the legally defined minimum distance of 1.5 m is difficult for drivers to estimate and is therefore often not observed in reality.
The sensor system to be developed is intended to help raise awareness of this problem among drivers by providing immediate feedback to road users.
The task comprised the following components
- Concept development,
- Selection of suitable sensor technology (ultrasound, radar, optical camera),
- Feedback to road users,
- Construction of a prototype,
- first tests.
Three groups, each with 3 - 4 students, were dedicated to the topic.
Due to the positive response to the nature of the task and the direct practical relevance, the FH is planning to offer this interdisciplinary project again in the following semester. The City of Aachen is very happy to continue supporting the work.
