06/2019: Testing measures to avoid blind spots when turning right

Since June 2019, the city of Aachen has been continuously reviewing measures to prevent accidents when turning right due to blind spots. There is a high potential for conflict when motor vehicles/trucks turn right and do not see cyclists on their right due to the blind spot. To this end, exchanges are being sought with other local authorities, manufacturers, logistics companies and research institutes. The findings form the basis for the selection of measures deemed to be effective.

So far, for example, the following have been investigated/implemented

  • Turning assistance systems on large vehicles (realized)
  • Bike-Flash,
  • Fixed traffic mirrors at traffic signalized junctions (implemented),
  • Public relations work to raise awareness in the form of stickers for motorized traffic.

Further measures are being examined.
